KOLKATA: It is not every day that a four-year-old gets to meet Bollywood heartthrob Salman Khan. But, Mohammad Farhan Rana Apoorva, a resident of Narayanganj in Bangladesh, got to be with his idol for more than 30 minutes. A cancer patient, suffering from acute metastatic neuro-plasma, Apoorva is at present admitted to the Thakurpukar cancer hospital. A diehard fan of Sallu-bhai, Apoorva wished to meet his idol. The NGO, Make a Wish Foundation, with Indigo Airlines came forward to fulfil his dream on Thursday.

According to Mohammad Masood Rana Minto, his son showed the first signs of his illness two years ago. "Several doctors in Bangladesh failed to diagnose him. It was finally left to the doctors at Thakurpukur to detect his illness and begin treatment. Ever since he got admitted at Thakupukur, he became a big fan of Salman. The television set in his room beamed only his movies. When Big Boss began, he refused to eat unless he was allowed to watch all the repeat episodes of the television show. I have lost count how many times he has watched the 'Dabangg' movie series," said Minto.

A few days ago, when Make a Wish Foundation made the offer to fly him to Mumbai, Minto - a businessman - did not object. "Even though I knew that Apoorva was suffering from acute pain for the past 20 days as his tumour has enlarged, I gave permission," he said.

On Thursday, Apoorva left for Mumbai with his mother Sheikha Akhtar Urmee. "We reached by 2.30pm and were directly taken to Versova where Salman was shooting for his film 'Mental' due to be released next week. Salman was very cooperative and he gave us more time than he had originally promised. He asked us extensively about the illness Apoorva was suffering from. He asked Apoorva to assist him to punch some goons. By the time we left, my son was over the moon. He kept repeating that he needed to pinch himself to ascertain if all this was true.

Salman told us that he does not like his charitable work to be highlighted too much and hence we are keeping the photographs close to our heart," said Urmee.

The family returned on Thursday night. by another Indigo flight from Mumbai.

"It has been two years that we have been putting up at a lodge near Thakurpukur. We have been through the toughest of times. It is difficult to see your son suffer in front of your eyes. But this one day has given us hope for the future," she said.

A spokesperson for the Make A Wish Foundation said they were amazed to see Apoorva's reactions. "A year ago, the child had expressed the wish to meet Salman. On Wednesday, when our volunteers met him, he could hardly open his eyes. He, however, asked us if we were keeping our promise to take him to Salman. We treated it as a 'rush wish' (finalized within 48 hours) and contacted Salman's office. He agreed immediately and Indigo sponsored four tickets for us. As a precaution, we took a doctor with us. Doctors at the cancer hospital told us the boy had rarely moved out of his bed in the past three days and only drank milk. But on Thursday, he was ready to greet us at the ward. He even ate a sandwich and drank a bottle of soft drink in his excitement to meet his favourite Salman bhai," said Shakuntala, who accompanied Apoorva to Mumabi on behalf of Make A Wish Foundation.
